About Sue

With over a decade of dedicated experience in literacy education, Sue has established a reputation as a compassionate and skilled advocate for student success in reading. Having earned her Bachelor's degrees in biology and social work at the University of Alaska, Sue worked as a biological technician in the wilderness of Alaska. After taking a break to raise her three daughters, Sue discovered her true vocation when she became a highly-qualified paraprofessional reading tutor in the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District. She spent 11 years working closely with diverse student populations, providing targeted support to struggling readers and fostering a love for literacy across all abilities. Her work emphasized interventions tailored to individual student needs.

After an extensive practicum, Sue is now certified as a Structured Literacy Dyslexia Interventionist from the Center for Effective Reading Instruction. She is also trained in the Bowman's Orton-Gillingham Plus. Orton-Gillingham is a gold standard in literacy intervention for people with dyslexia, known for its structured, multisensory, systematic and individualized techniques.

Building on her extensive tutoring experience, Sue now serves as the reading specialist at The Lamb of God School, where she provides individualized literacy interventions using Orton-Gillingham approach, especially addressing the needs of students experiencing dyslexia. She ensures that every student receives the support they need to thrive.

Through her work, Sue has demonstrated an unwavering dedication to improving literacy outcomes, equipping students with the skills and confidence to succeed both in and out of the classroom. Her expertise, empathy, and innovative approach continue to make a lasting impact on students, families, and the educational community.

Parent

" We have been extremely pleased with Susan's professionalism, as well as her flexibility to meet (my daughter's) unique needs. Since (my daughter) suffers from ADHD and anxiety, there are often times when she gets distracted or may become frustrated with a particular task.

When this happens, (my daughter) may shut down and not respond or become hysterical. Susan does a wonderful job shifting gears, giving (my daughter) choices, or a break with a preferred activity or game."
